Lower Prep (Reception)

At Vernon Lodge School Lower Prep is part of the Early Years Department and is a natural  progression from Kindergarten.  It bridges the gap between the Kindergarten and Key Stage One.  The opportunities for taking part in shared experiences with Kindergarten promote a natural transition into school.  However, as the year passes by opportunities are organised to socialise with the children and staff in Year One, which usually promotes a smooth move at the end of the year.

Children are taught in a safe and stimulating environment indoors and outdoors, where they continue to follow the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum; combining traditional and modern methods of learning.

There are high ratio of adults to children which enables us to provide each child with the opportunity to develop at their own pace and pursue their own interests whilst acquiring new skills and interests.  We are very proud of what the children achieve; this was highlighted in our most recent inspection which found that the children are on course to meet all the Early Learning Goals by the end of Reception, with many likely to exceed them(Independent Schools Inspectorate ISI, 2011).

ICT is taught across the curriculum.  There are opportunities to use an Interactive Whiteboard and the children have access to a well equipped computer room.  They also have recently enjoyed using our new reading scheme; this is supported by online activities which the children can share at home.

Additional activities include:

  • Speech and Drama
  • Football Coaching
  • Dance
  • Gymnastics

Opportunities to take part in school events and organised visits enhance the children’s opportunities for learning.

As with Kindergarten, relationships with parents are excellent.  We believe in working together to develop an effective partnership for the children.  Although parents meetings are held twice a year staff are always willing to discuss achievements and concerns.

In Lower Prep the children learn through:

  • Structured Play
  • Talking to others
  • Investigating and discovering
  • Making choices
  • Thinking and reflecting
  • Working either independently or in groups
  • Having FUN!

These activities are designed to develop confident, caring children, who make the most of their school experience and enjoy high levels of success.
