Gardening

Today, our Kindergarten children decided they would like to get some compost from the compost heap Mr Taylor has and fill a large planter box which they hope to turn into a vegetable plot.

The children were very enthusiastic about their task, especially when they discovered some mini beasts living there!

Hopefully they will be able to do some food tasting soon, especially if the rabbits keep away!

The Olympic Torch a Burning Question!

Year 3 have been looking at the Olympics for their topic work over the past few weeks, and as the Olympic games draw nearer & the Olympic Flame was recently lit in Greece, we had a burning question that just needed answering.  ”If the flame is lit by the suns rays in Greece to symbolise purity, how will British Airways transport the flame on the plane from Greece to Cornwall?  Will it need to be re lit, and how will we do that?”
So we asked them through facebook.

This is the plane which will carry the flame from Greece to the UK

They responded with the following:

“Hi Vernon Lodge School – The flame is not extinguished during the flight, so we don’t have to worry about having a sunny day when it arrives. The flame has been classified as a ‘ceremonial flame’ by the Civil Aviation Authority, and they have given us permission to transport it whilst still alight. The Torch will be kept in a Davy lamp in a special cradle strapped to a seat. It has got enough smoke-free fuel to keep it going during the flight.”

So now Year 3 can let everyone know how the flame arrives on the plane!

Residential Trip 2012 part II

Unfortunately due to a technical issue caused by the weather, Mrs Wheeler had no photographs to send us of the Tuesday afternoon activities! It was far too wet to take photos of the older group, and the younger group spent most of the afternoon exploring caves!

The older group had fantastic time in kayaks and canoes, playing games on the lake, even during the hail and snow!! They then built rafts and raced them across the lake. Lydia, Dominic, Sulayman and Max came first.

We then had the opportunity to jump in the lake!! Mrs Trubshaw and Mrs Wheeler had to jump in they reported “It honestly took your breath away!!”

During the early evening the children enjoyed a disco, with musical statues and a limbo competition!

Residential Trip 2012

The coach departed at 8:30 this morning, taking with it most of the juniors, heading off for a 3 day adventure at The Old Vicarage Adventure Centre.  It was certainly an action packed day.  The children took part in Jousting, Canoeing, The LEAP of FAITH, rifle shooting, the Zip Wire, High Ropes followed by Orienteering in the evening.

From the photographs we have been receiving from Mrs Wheeler, it certainly looks like the children are enjoying themselves.  We are certainly looking forward to hearing the childrens stories when they return to school on Wednesday.  This certainly is an enhanced form of education and learning for the children of Vernon Lodge School, helping them with their confidence and team building skills!

There will be more photographs of the trip appearing on the schools Facebook page, so take a visit and Like Vernon Lodge.

KG’s own Californian experience

This week in Kindergarten, the children have been learning about California.  This follows on from Mrs Smiths recent visit to California to visit The Little Pre-School and other educational settings.

Mrs Smith has been explaining to the children about her time at The Little Pre-School and how the two schools are the same in many ways, but there are also many differences.  Mrs Smith began to explain about time differences, how when the children at Vernon Lodge were getting ready for bed, the Pre-School children were having their lunch.  Mrs Smith also explained certain language differences such as trash and rubbish, as well as looking at maps of the area, showing the children some of the native animals and looking at the differences and similarities in the US flag and the Union Jack.

The children in Kindergarten then painted a poster using the colours of the American flag.  The picture changed many times as the children began experimenting with different ways of using paints, using sponges, rollers, brushes and of course their hands!  They even finished off their poster with some glitter!!

We know the children will certainly enjoy this summer term as they learn more about Mrs Smiths experiences in California.  If you missed our previous news item on the California visit, you will be able to read about it here.
